The other day after work I tuned into the Ronald Reagan Jr show on 1150AM as I usually do for the drive home. I normally agree with him 90% of the time but on that particular day he was preaching about how strong a case he has for abolishing the death penalty in this country. He was overly confident in his position and welcomed anyone who was pro death penalty to call and debate him.
I NEVER am able to get through but I called anyway and was the first caller to speak to him on the topic. I prefaced the call by informing Ron that I am a Democrat for the most part and very liberal. BUT, I am 100000% in favor of the death penalty. He kept insisting that our system is created by man, we are flawed so therefore our system is flawed and bound to kill innocent people who are wrongly convicted.
I am the first to admit that yes, innocent people have been put to death. Texas is always used as the example and right there, people should take that with a grain of salt. Look who the numbnuts governor was!! Bush was too quick to pull the trigger and it just shows that the system needs to be fixed, not abolished. Ron Reagan kept saying that the system needs to be abolished because of the risk of killing one innocent person. I quickly responded that you cannot throw out the baby with the bathwater.
I agree that not a single innocent person should be put to death; who would argue with that? That being said, our system needs to enact safeguards and strict rules on who should be put to death. When someone is convicted with DNA evidence alone, I say no death penalty because DNA evidence has been shown to be wrong on some occasions and at the same time, has exonerated wrongly convicted persons.
Who should be put to death? Special circumstances create the possibility of the death penalty and for good reason. Why should some evil scum of the earth who killed someone's loved one be allowed to live the rest of their lives with three hot meals and a roof over their head? Those that argue that prison is horrible are comparing prison life to their own sheltered, comfortable lives. People do not realize what "luxuries" are afforded to prisoners. Why do prisoners get a free education on the taxpayer dime? Do not give me this rehabilitation bullshit about getting them ready for the outside world in the event they are released. Too many of these bastards should never be released. You tell me that Philip Garrido should have been free, free to kidnap Jaycee 18 years ago when his sick ass should have been in prison for life or dead long before he robbed that poor child her innocence. Or how about Richard Allen Davis ? Polly Klass would still be alive if our criminal system actually punished these evil bastards accordingly.
Our criminal system is far too soft. As a law school graduate, I wholly understand the Constitution and the inalienable rights it affords its citizens. The right to a fair speedy jury trial comprised of your peers and the right to competent counsel are not an issue, nobody will argue that. I however have a problem with how long the appeals process takes and the costs involved. Why drag the process needlessly and cause further anguish to the victims families? Why drag on the process even after Richard Allen Davis flips the bird and shows no remorse?
If I were King or Dictator, I would pass a law allowing the victims families to tear the murderer to pieces with their bare hands or bring back public hangings. Sounds cruel and barbaric? Tell that to little Polly Klass while she was being raped and killed or to little Samantha Runyon. Nothing makes me more sick than these child murderers and it makes me sick to have Ron Reagan tell me that I am allowing emotions into the equation and our system cannot be personal. BULLSHIT. Ron said that if someone killed his child he would want to kill the person with his bare hands but would not actually do so. F that! The caller after me agreed with me and said she was against the death penalty until she had her own kids and is now pro death penalty and it is impossible NOT to allow emotions into the equation. Victims are people, not emotionless statistics. I personally would take justice into my own hands and kill someone if they harmed my children and most people agree with me.
To all those that state an eye for eye will leave the whole world blind just do not get it. Hammurabi was right with SOME of his codes. I am a peaceful man but there are times when society can only take so much. Our system coddles and tries to rehab people that are impossible to rehab. One look at Richard Allen Davis' criminal history would show you that there is no way in hell he should have been free. He is the perfect case of someone that was repeatedly arrested and convicted yet was able to get free. He should have either been locked up for life in a maximum security prison or killed. He faked suicide on one occasion to be put in a lower security psychiatric facility so he could escape. I am so sick of the insanity plea, it is overused. Granted some people are insane but why are they free to run a muck? Anyone that can kill a child is obviously insane and that should not be a defense.
Even in cases where someone is caught red handed, witnessed by multiple people, caught on camera etc, they are a "suspect". Even today, Phillip Garrido and his wife have "allegedly" committed the kidnapping of Jaycee. What is wrong with our system? These bastards were caught red handed!!! Why waste taxpayer money with a long dragged out trial? I am not saying we should deny people a fair trial but the red tape and hoops we must jump through to rid society of this filth is absurd.
Like I said, I am a liberal democrat for the most part but I agree with the republican stance on crime punishment and the death penalty. To all those that say capital punishment does not deter murder, BULLSHIT. Maybe if our system did not coddle criminals and actually made them suffer, they would think twice about committing crimes. I know there are some criminals that simply do not care about the consequences but we cannot give up the fight for tougher punishment for criminals.
Maybe we should think a little more like Singapore where personal responsibility actually means something. Remember that dumb little American punk Michael Fay who was busted for tagging? His dumb ass was caned and he deserved it. Here, that would be deemed cruel and unusual punishment. BULLSHIT. Singapore is a clean city-state and they make sure it stays that way. Here, people are not held accountable for their crimes. Here, we are a nation of squeamish bleeding heart pansies.
Ok, that is my rant. Sorry it was so long.
